OARDC Gourley Greenhouse Tornado Damage

In September of 2010, a tornado raked across the OARDC campus in Wooster, OH severely damaging a number of greenhouse ranges, and destroyed other ranges. Project included determination of repairability vs. total loss on the different greenhouses, repair and replacement valuation, and engineering on the repaired Gourly greenhouse range.  Scope of work was 4.7 Million dollars.

University of Connecticut Botany Greenhouse Renovation

4,390 sqft, 3,310 sqft and 3,310 sqft respectively and a 3,550 sqft supporting header house. The facility is used for teaching and research to supplement the botany program.
Three renovation scenarios including budgetary pricing were proposed: Base renovation works, Extended renovation work, and complete greenhouse replacement including deconstruction of existing greenhouses and new construction using the same footprint. The university chose the base renovation of their largest wing along with head house renovations due to budget constraints of ~$1.4M. Construction documents were prepared and submitted for this option.

Client:

Southern Illinois University Botany Greenhouse

The Scope of work at SIUC is a $3.6M project to renovate or replace two existing greenhouse facilities on campus. Both sites have a head house and attached greenhouses.
The Botany greenhouse range has three East-West Lord and Burnham greenhouse wings approximately 1033 sqft each, connected on the East side by a North-South running greenhouse of 2,890 sqft. This house is connected on the South end to a supporting 2,180 sqft brick/block header house. The facility is used for teaching and research to supplement the botany program. It has been determined that these ranges are repairable and plans are underway to renovate the space including upgraded roof and sidewall vents, evaporative cooling, exhaust fans, shade systems, benching, controls, heating and other systems.
The existing teaching Agriculture Greenhouse range consists of ~7000 sqft of wood bar lapped glass greenhouse with a supporting 1,400 sqft brick/block header house. Due to the poor condition of the existing greenhouse, the building will be replaced with a four compartment ~7200 sqft new laminated roof glass venlo style greenhouse, with upgrades to the head house building.
